Hello! We’re looking for some company…
Who are we?
My Rural Activity Centre is just south of Canterbury in Kent. We have lovely paddocks, a large indoor training barn, a classroom with projector, an office/loo building and an animal house, as well as car parking. There is water, electric, lighting and wifi across the site.
We are on the edge of a village, surrounded by farmland and ancient woodlands with miles of footpaths and bridleways. At the moment we run a Level 2 Animal Nursing Assistant course, reward-based positive dog training and birds of prey days.
Our office dogs/teaching assistants are Boy (13yo spaniel, one eye, will sit on you) and Maisie (2yo collie x, boundless energy, will lick you).
What are we looking for?
We are looking to find someone (or several people) looking to diversify their work by renting some of our space/equipment to run their own business from our lovely site. The chance for you to try out a new idea without the full setup costs and starting entirely from scratch in a supportive, positive environment.
Your plan will help us make the best use of our facilities. We’re open to flexible terms and want to pay forward the kindness offered to us when we first set up. If you have an outline plan and a positive approach, we want to hear from you!
The right person(s) will fit with our ethos. We are positive, sustainable, and spend most of our time outside (in all weathers!). We have the highest standards of care for the animals we keep and will expect the highest of welfare standards with regards to working with our animals, while being instructional and inclusive. We work hard but on our own terms. We are kind to each other, our visitors, our neighbours and the environment.
Your idea will be something that complements our existing activities. You could use the animal house and classroom to run your CPD courses, do educational visits with the animals, add crafts, meetings or environmental/wildlife activities in the barn. We’re open to your ideas.
Want to find out more?
I’m Jo. I’m a vet nurse with 20 years experience and a qualified teacher. For ten years I taught in a large FE college, working with students with additional learning and behavioural needs. Two years ago I left full-time employment and set up My Rural to improve my work-life balance, spend more time with the dogs and ponies and work on my own terms.
My plan has developed and changed over the last two years as the dog training part of the Centre has expanded much more than I had anticipated. There is therefore a great opportunity for someone to develop the animal care/educational aspects. This might be across one day a week, a few days, evenings or full-time. I am open to ideas (just a few: birthday experiences, family/group experiences, fear-free handling/meets, district vet nursing services, home education sessions, school visits and outreach, SEN sessions, mental health support sessions, reteats, external speakers, CPD courses…)
I have plenty of advice and help to share (if wanted!) and am happy to share experiences. Please note that this is not an employed position but an opportunity to create and develop your own small business.
If you are interested after getting this far… (!)
Drop me an email: email@example.com. Introduce yourself, your experience and your business idea(s).
The next step would be a chat over the phone and arranging a site visit. If we’re both keen at that stage, a more formal pitch/business plan will be required and we’ll get into the details.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Jo (and the dogs, horses, sheep, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, etc etc…)
