When Julie Beacham joined the veterinary world in 1995, it was supposed to be just for a year – a short detour before returning to her ‘proper job’ in the NHS. She’d spent ten years there, first as a nurse, later as a clinical scientist. But Julie’s real passion had always been animals.
At school, she’d been told that girls couldn’t be vets, so she gave up on her initial idea of vet school and took a degree in zoology and ecology instead. And then, one fateful day, she took her dog to her vet – Wendover Heights, a large mixed practice in the Chilterns – and noticed they were looking for a part-time receptionist. She got the job and, by her fourth day, had volunteered to take on health and safety and rationalising stock.
She soon fell in love with the practice, the people and the profession – and stayed for 30 years.
In the early 2000s, Julie joined the Veterinary Practice Management Association (as we were then known) and studied for the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management. Having achieved it in 2010, she went on to serve on the VPMA Council, on its Certification & Training Committee, as Regional Organiser for Buckinghamshire and in many other roles.
In 2018, she became VMG President, leading our association with dedication and distinction during her presidential year.
And Julie has now just retired from her role as Practice Manager at Wendover Heights – but not without a last piece of exciting news – a call from Petplan to tell her she’s a finalist for this year’s Practice Manager of the Year Award!
She says: “I’ve spent 30 years working with an amazing team of people, both in practice and across the veterinary community. Practice management can be a lonely job, but being part of the VMG gave me support, lifelong friendships and the training to do my job better. Being nominated for Practice Manager of the Year is the cherry on top of a wonderful career.”
