Head Veterinary Nurse – Belmont Vets (IVC), Hereford

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic Head Nurse with a passion and commitment to drive the team forward and to lead our team of 8 qualified RVN’s, 2 SVN’s and 1 ANA.

The role is approximately 80% clinical: 20% administrative. As the Head Nurse, in addition to general nursing duties, you will be the line manager and the point of contact for the nursing team undertaking management duties such as organising the rota, approving holiday requests/CPD, conducting one-to-one appraisals, developing nurse clinics and the nursing team, HR duties, attending regular Line Manager Meetings, running regular nurse team meetings and being involved in the practice standards scheme.

Working as a clinical nurse will involve anaesthesia and theatre shifts, kennel and dispensary shifts, recovering patients and liaising with case vets & owners, laboratory work, nurse clinic rotations and on-call, also being a Clinical Coach to our degree student.

The role consists of a 37.5hour week over 5 days with a 1:5 on call weekend rota and 1 night per week. The shift patterns vary between 7.30am and 7pm.

About Us

An exciting opportunity to take on a head nurse position in our single site, small animal practice in beautiful Hereford. As a practice we endeavour to set high standards and keep up with new developments to give the best possible patient care and excellent service to our clients, as such we are a RCVS accredited practice.

We are a nurse training practice and run a variety of nurse clinics including senior/puppy checks and weight management. We have a friendly and welcoming team with many long standing nurses who began as volunteers and went on to train with us who now hold senior positions.

We conduct many routine surgeries in house whilst working closely with our local Cats Protection Clinic and have a visiting orthopaedic specialist and ultrasonographer that attend the practice regularly, as well as a few of our own vets completing certificates in Cardiology, Surgery and Oncology.

We have our own in-house Idexx biochemistry and haematology analysers along with standard diagnostic laboratory equipment, digital x-ray, multi parameter anaesthetic monitoring machine, ultrasound and ECG.

We have a team of 7 vets (3 of which are currently undertaking certificates) 8 nurses, 2 student nurses, 1 ANA and a brilliant team of receptionists and support staff. We are a friendly team to work with and regularly arrange social events outside of work. We take part in various bake sales and charity walks to help our local Cats Protection and Guide dog charities.

Applicant Requirements

The ideal candidate will be someone with previous head nurse experience, but we will consider those looking to advance into the role. You must work well in a team, be approachable, confident, innovative and lead by example.

You also need to be able to make decisions effectively and manage staff appropriately, bringing out the best in them and drive the practice forward with respect to the nursing team. Clinical coach with experience in NPL (Nursing progress log) would be advantageous.
