Could you introduce yourself to our members?
I’m Louise Newman, a veterinary nurse by background and now Hospital Lead at Blue Cross’ flagship 24-hour animal hospital in London. I’ve worked in the profession since 2001, across both private and charity practice and was proud to become the first veterinary nurse to lead our hospital in 2022. In 2023 I was named Petplan’s Practice Manager of the Year, and last year I joined the VMG Board of Directors.
Tell us a bit about your day job and what you find most rewarding?
My role is very operational, overseeing a large and busy hospital. What I enjoy most is spending time with the team – supporting them, developing their skills and watching them grow in confidence. I get a real buzz from seeing the hospital work efficiently and knowing our improvements positively impact staff, clients and their pets.
What are you most proud of (so far!)?
Becoming the first veterinary nurse to lead Blue Cross’ flagship hospital has been an incredible milestone – and one that demonstrates the opportunities available to veterinary nurses and support staff. I’m also immensely proud of the teams I’ve led – seeing them achieve, often during difficult times, is a real highlight.
Why did you volunteer to join the VMG board and how are you finding the role?
I wanted to use my platform to help inspire and encourage veterinary nurses and support staff to believe there are no limits to what they can achieve in leadership. The VMG plays such an important role in shaping and supporting the leaders of the future, and I’m excited to contribute to that. So far, it’s been both energising and rewarding to collaborate with such passionate and talented colleagues.
What does leadership mean to you?
For me, leadership is about communication, compassion and creating an environment where people can thrive. It’s about empowering others, encouraging growth and driving positive change while always staying authentic.
What one piece of advice would you give to members looking to develop their leadership skills (aside from studying for the VMG’s qualifications, of course!)?
Be courageous and step outside your comfort zone. Say yes to opportunities, even if you don’t feel ready – that’s where the learning happens. And remember, mistakes are part of the journey; own them, learn from them, and keep moving forward.
What do you enjoy doing outside work?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family, keeping active and making the most of the outdoors. I also love to travel and explore new places whenever I can.
Tell us something about you that may surprise us!
I’m a huge Formula One fan! There’s nothing I enjoy more than a race day, watching the cars fly around the track. I love the strategy behind the sport and the incredible teamwork that makes it all happen.
