We spoke to Practice Management Assistant, Gina Seward DVLM, to find out more about building confidence and developing skills that can be applied straight away.
Could you introduce yourself to our members?
I’m Gina Seward, DVLM, Practice Management Assistant based in North Somerset, and I’ve been part of the team at Watkins + Tasker Vets for nearly five years. Over that time, I’ve had the opportunity to grow within the practice, develop my skills, and become involved in many different areas of the business. I really enjoy being part of such a supportive and dedicated team, and no two days are ever the same!
Tell us a little about your day job and what you find most rewarding?
I currently work as the Practice Management Assistant, which is a really varied and rewarding role. My day-to-day responsibilities include social media management, overseeing health and safety, producing vet and out-of-hours rotas, supporting HR processes, answering staff queries, and helping with the smooth running of the practice overall.
What I enjoy most about my role is being able to support the team. I find it incredibly rewarding when colleagues come to me with a problem or concern and I’m able to help find a solution that makes their day a little easier or helps them feel more at ease. Building positive relationships with the team and being someone people can rely on is something I really value. And of course, the cat cuddles along the way are definitely an added bonus!
What made you enrol on to the DVLM?
As my previous roles were outside of the veterinary industry, I wanted to gain a qualification that would not only strengthen my knowledge but also support my long-term career progression at Watkins + Tasker Vets. The DVLM course really stood out to me because it combined management and leadership training with veterinary-specific learning, making it directly relevant to my role and the industry I work in. It felt like the perfect opportunity to build my confidence, expand my understanding, and continue developing professionally.
What would you say are the most beneficial aspects of the course, and how has it supported your development?
For me, some of the most beneficial parts of the course were the mandatory modules A1 and C1. These modules gave me a much better understanding of different leadership styles, including my own, which has really helped me communicate and work more effectively with colleagues across the practice.
The course has supported my development in a number of ways, but one of the biggest has been through the project management module. This gave me the confidence and practical skills to manage projects more effectively, introduce new ideas within the business, and contribute to positive changes across the practice. I’ve been able to apply so much of what I learned directly into my role, which has made the course incredibly worthwhile.
What one piece of advice would your line manager give to other people leaders thinking about sending their staff on the course?
I let my Line Manager answer this and they said, “I would recommend putting your staff on the Diploma course as you get an engaged and enthusiastic colleague who may just bring back ideas to improve the practice and increase business.”
And finally, what one piece of advice would you give to other people considering enrolling on the course?
Do it! I’ve learnt so much throughout the course, both professionally and personally. My biggest piece of advice would be to take it in your stride and really enjoy the learning process. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make the most of your tutor – they’ve completed the course themselves and are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. The course is a fantastic opportunity to grow your confidence, develop your skills, and invest in your future career.
